A folio is a single leaf of a manuscript, and for centuries the blue on those leaves was lapis lazuli, ground into ultramarine. The painters destroyed the lapis to free the colour. On this page the stone stays whole. A single panel of silver, the ground darkened and the edge left bright, with the lapis set high and off centre. Nothing ground, nothing hidden.
